Job Description

RSJ Steels is seeking Class 2 HGV Drivers to join our dedicated transport team. This role is ideal for drivers who take pride in delivering essential materials safely and efficiently, ensuring our clients’ projects stay on track. You’ll operate modern rigid vehicles, transporting steel products across the UK, from bustling construction sites to industrial warehouses.

Key Responsibilities

Your day-to-day tasks will include:

• Vehicle Operation: Safely drive Class 2 (Category C) vehicles, including rigid lorries with tail lifts or cranes, to transport steel products.
• Load Management: Securely fasten steel beams, sheets, and bespoke components using chains, straps, and load locks to prevent shifting during transit.
• Loading/Unloading: Collaborate with warehouse teams to load/unload materials, using forklifts or overhead cranes where necessary.
• Route Planning: Optimize delivery routes using GPS and local knowledge to meet strict deadlines while minimizing fuel consumption.
• Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to Drivers’ Hours regulations, maintain accurate digital tachograph records, and complete mandatory Driver CPC training.
• Documentation: Manage delivery notes, PODs, and vehicle defect reports, ensuring seamless communication with the transport office.
• Customer Interaction: Represent RSJ Steels professionally, resolving delivery queries and building rapport with site managers and clients.
• Vehicle Maintenance: Conduct pre- and post-journey checks, report defects promptly, and ensure vehicles are clean and roadworthy.
• Safety Leadership: Champion a safety-first approach by adhering to traffic laws, conducting risk assessments, and reporting incidents.
• Flexibility: Work variable shifts, including early starts, evenings, and occasional weekends, to meet project demands.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

• Valid UK Class 2 (Category C) Licence.
• Current Driver CPC Qualification.
• Digital Tachograph Card proficiency.
• Strong understanding of UK driving regulations and load-securement standards.

Skills & Experience:

• Minimum 1 year of Class 2 driving experience (steel or construction logistics preferred).
• Clean driving record with no major endorsements (e.g., DR, IN, CU).
• Physical fitness for manual handling of heavy materials (up to 25kg).
• Familiarity with steel products and securement techniques.
• Strong communication skills for client interactions and team collaboration.

Preferred Attributes:

• Forklift (FLT) or overhead crane certification.
• Experience with curtain-sided or flatbed vehicles.
• Knowledge of UK construction sites and access requirements.

After a thorough vehicle check, you load 12-tonne steel beams using the depot crane, double-checking load security. Your first delivery is a Birmingham construction site, where you coordinate with site managers to unload safely. Post-lunch, you navigate narrow country lanes to a rural fabrication workshop, delivering precision-cut steel sheets. Back at base, you complete paperwork and debrief with the transport manager, sharing feedback on route challenges.
