The Role: Bookkeeper/Assistant Accountant

Key Responsibilities
Financial Record Management
- Maintain accurate ledgers using QuickBooks, Xero, and Sage 50.
- Process invoices, receipts, and expenses, ensuring alignment with HMRC regulations.
- Reconcile bank statements and manage petty cash for multiple client accounts.
Payroll & Compliance
- Execute end-to-end payroll processing for clients, including PAYE, NIC, and pension contributions.
- Prepare and submit VAT returns, CIS reports, and other statutory filings.
- Assist with year-end audits, providing documentation and resolving discrepancies.
Financial Reporting
- Generate monthly P&L statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, cost-saving opportunities, and risks.
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities for client projects.
Client Collaboration
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients, explaining financial processes in clear, non-technical language.
- Train SME clients on accounting software best practices.
- Collaborate with senior accountants to deliver tailored financial strategies.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
- Education: Degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent qualification (e.g., AAT Level 3+).
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage 50.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros).
- Solid understanding of UK GAAP and HMRC compliance.
- Attention to Detail: A track record of error-free bookkeeping.
- Communication: Ability to simplify complex financial concepts for clients.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with payroll software (e.g., BrightPay, Sage Payroll).
- Knowledge of charity accounting (SORP) or public sector frameworks.
- Part-qualified ACCA/CIMA or willingness to pursue certification.
